The delay is designed in, it isn't a problem as such. It's to stop the
EV people from killing motors/controllers/drive chains by throwing a
forward moving vehicle into reverse. It really does put a lot of stress
on the system doing this.
(I'm learning to drive vintage trams at the moment - '3rd emergency'
is to throw the thing into reverse - after doing so the tram is to be
driven at low speed straight back to the depot for inspection!)

However this interlock isn't so appropriate for a boating application
where the propeller will cavitate instead of snapping something.
