[Electric Boats] Re: Electric Boat Wiring Fails - Harms other boat

Hi James,

A little over a year ago I posted the USCG electrical handbook in the files section. You can download it from there.
Its worth looking at and understanding.
I posted it when I had read of some members that had installed circuit protection too far down the line that did not meet code.
I'm a marine surveyor by trade (however I know very little about electric propulsion and enjoy the wealth of information in this group)and a loss we had in this area some years ago came to mind and promoted me to post the handbook.
In that loss a vessel had a short on-board that started a fire and burned his vessel and several others, totaling them all.
Upon inspecting the vessel it was determined that his circuit protection did not meet the CFR and was in contravention of federal law. His insurance company denied his claim and the other suits against him as he had broken federal law.
It got very ugly for all involved.

Cheers, Don

PS below is that particular CFR if you are interested:

FEDERAL LAW:
183.455 Over-current Protection: General.
(b) A manually reset, trip-free circuit breaker or fuse must be placed at the
source of power for each circuit or conductor except:
(1) If it is physically impractical to place the circuit breaker or fuse at the
source of power, it may be placed within seven inches of the source of
power for each circuit or conductor, measured along the conductor.
(2) If it is physically impractical to place the circuit breaker or fuse at or
within seven inches of the source of power, it may be placed within
40 inches of the source of power for each circuit or conductor,
measured along the conductor, if the conductor is contained
throughout its entire distance between the source of power and the
required circuit breaker or fuse in a sheath or enclosure such as a
junction box, control box, or enclosed panel.
